What is line-scan imaging?

Using area array (or 2-D) sensors for the imaging of fast moving objects or continuous webs can be a problem if the frame read time of the sensor takes too long.

In these situations the use of a line-scan sensor is an excellent solution. In contrast to area array sensors, line-scan sensors have a very fast line read time. Therefore they are perfectly suited to image high speed objects or webs. With a single line of pixels, line-scan cameras build continuous images not limited in their vertical resolution. The vertical resolution comes from the object’s own motion (for example on a conveyor belt). The image of, for example, a 1024 pixel line-scan sensor will be 1024 x N pixels, where N keeps growing as long as the camera is running.

Another advantage is the price of a line-scan sensor, which is much lower compared to a high resolution 2-D infrared sensor. This is especially of interest for infrared applications.

What is SWIR line scan imaging used for?

Line scan infrared imaging is used in a multitude of applications, based on infrared imaging or infrared spectroscopy.

Infrared imaging applications

Imaging applications with line scan SWIR cameras are:

  • Silicon wafer or ingot inspection, whereas silicon is transparent for wavelengths > 1100 nm)
  • Silicon luminescence detection, whereas a luminescence peak is typically around 1150 nm
  • Moisture detection, whereas water has a strong absorption peak between 1400 and 1500 nm
  • Sorting while looking for differences in absorption and reflection for specific wavelengths in the SWIR range
  • High temperature SWIR line scan imaging

Infrared spectroscopy applications

Spectroscopy means that we use diffracted light and look at molecular vibrations bands (in the SWIR band, i.e., 800 to 1700 nm range) in order to identify a specific material. For spectroscopy, typically rectangular pixels are preferred as they enhance the sensitivity. Typical applications are Raman spectroscopy (with laser excitation at 1064 nm), or spectrometers for optical performance monitoring in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks, where different wavelengths (around 1550 nm) are multiplexed in one optical fiber.

What do we offer?

We offer a range of SWIR line scan cameras called Lynx. The Lynx line scan cameras are very small SWIR line scan camera available in three line resolutions of 5121024 or 2048 pixels. The maximum line rate goes up to 40 kHz depending on the model. For an easy integration the Lynx SWIR line scan cameras feature an industry-standard interface such as CameraLink or GigE. 

We offer a Lynx-CL (CameraLink) and a Lynx-GigE (GigE Vision). Both these models are equipped with an external trigger connector.

What features are needed?

  • High image resolution
    The amount of pixels has a huge impact on the image. The higher the resolution, the more detail your image contains
  • Low noise level and high dynamic range
    A low noise level assures a high sensitivity, while a high dynamic range results in a high image contrast
  • Trigger interface with low jitter
    A trigger interface with low jitter is a necessity for high speed applications to synchronize the camera
  • Rugged and small cameras
    The ruggedness and size of our infrared cameras are important features for an imaging system. The smaller the camera, the easier it is to integrate. Rugged cameras withstand harsh environmental conditions
